Jethmalani Suspended from BJP for 'Indiscipline'

New Delhi, Nov 25 (PTI): Cracking the whip, BJP President Nitin Gadkari today suspended a defiant Ram Jethmalani from the party with immediate effect for daring it to act against him on the CBI chief's appointment issue, saying it was "gross indiscipline".

A meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board has been convened tomorrow at 4.30 PM to take a call on his expulsion, party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters here.

"Our party president Nitin Gadkari has taken cognizance of Ram Jethmalani's statements and his challenge that no action can be taken against him and has suspended his membership of the party with immediate effect," he said.

Jethmalani invited the BJP wrath after attacking the party for criticising the appointment of new CBI Director Ranjit Sinha.

The 86-year-old lawyer-turned-politician followed this up with remarks today in Mumbai that no action can be taken against him by the BJP, virtually challenging the authority of Gadkari and other top leaders.

Hussain said since the BJP Constitution gives the right to expel an MP or MLA only to the party's Parliamentary Board- the highest decision making body of the organisation-Gadkari has convened its meeting tomorrow afternoon to decide on Jethmalani's expulsion from the party.

"A decision on Jethmalani's expulsion will be taken by the Parliamentary Board tomorrow," Hussain said.

Today's decision was not unexpected and the party had indicated yesterday that strong action against Jethmalani may be taken.

Jethmalani, BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, has been speaking against the BJP top brass for the past few years.

His tirade began with an attack on Gadkari when he asked the BJP President to step down immediately in the wake of charges of dubious funding of his Purti Group. His son and party leader Mahesh had also made the same demand.

The second salvo from Jethmalani came yesterday when he wrote to Gadkari criticising the BJP stand against the appointment of Sinha as the next CBI Director.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that Sinha's appointment be kept in abeyance as the Select Committee of Rajya Sabha on Lokpal had suggested that the CBI director should be appointed by a collegium and this had not been followed by the government.

"Jethmalani's statement opposing the two leaders- Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj- has helped the Congress. The party has taken it seriously as sees it as falling within the ambit of gross indiscipline. The party cannot allow any of its members to make such public statements (against the party)," Hussain said.

He maintained that Jethmalani's actions have harmed the party.

BJP sources said action against Jethmalani was also warranted as other leaders like Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha have been speaking against the top leadership. This is likely to serve as a warning to them to fall in line. Both these Lok Sabha MPs have said Gadkari should resign.

Jethmalani is considered close to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and is helping him fight the 2002 riots cases.

Earlier, an article by RSS ideologue M G Vaidya on his blog had said Jethmalani was acting at Modi's behest.

The RSS has also been unhappy with Jethmalani's attacks on Gadkari, who is the Sangh's protege.

In Mumbai, Jethmalani said many in the party shared his views, but "few had the capacity" to express their views openly.

He, however, clarified that his views on Sinha's appointment were his own and not of the BJP, where "I am a small person."

"If there is any action taken against me, I will welcome it but I don't think anyone has the guts to take any action against me," he told reporters on the sidelines of a launching of a book written by a city-based journalist.

Yesterday, Jethmalani had attacked the party for criticising the appointment of new CBI Director and said the government's decision has "averted national calamity".

On if there were more people in the party having a similar stand, Jethmalani said, "I am sure there are more. I am 100 per cent sure that there are many more, many more but all don't have the capacity to speak the truth publicly and openly."

In Delhi, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said Jethmalani's suspension was an "internal matter of the BJP"

True spirit of opposition is to embrace any good decision taken by ruling government at the center and protect the rights of the people in times of erroneous decision by center. Just opposing never solves any problems. Giving practical solutions that are workable makes a country run smoothly. Look at some of the western and North American opposition parties - how they come together and work together in times of crisis? I think even Pakistan opposition does a better job!

For once, Jethmalani was right and BJP should have been quick to understand, accept and act on it. The action of BJP only further destroyed their crumbling image. The whole Indian Political scenario is not only utterly corrupt but deplorable irrespective of party.

Not BJP it is your Congress which has no internal democracy. At least the BJP members can openly criticize their leaders, but in congress nobody has the guts to criticize their italian madam or Amul baby. So first you improve the democracy process of your congis then advise other parties.

BJP is divided into two groups. One is Mr. Jetmalani, with Sinha and Sinha who want Modi to be projected as PM candidate. S.Swaraj, Gatkari and Jaitly are another group who want to keep away Modi from PM's chair as they themselves are dreaming PM's chair.
If BJP managed to grap majority, do billiyon ki ladai mein bandar faida utayega !

I warn the voters of our region, not to turn sentimental on those tall promises by these seasoned politicians. Please grow up, use brain and act with maturity and vote sensibly this time. They are coming to our door steps only during election time, not to help us but for their license to loot us.
Hence find these qualities in them before ing and voting for them:
    1. Are they honest?
    2. Are they hard working?
    3. Are they in touch with you only during election?
    4. Did they solve any of you people’s burning problem?
    5. Do they practice divide and rule method to get vote?
    6. Do they exploit religion to get vote?
    7. Did they fulfill what they had promised in their manifesto?
    8. Did they their assets before getting nominated? And
    9. Is he reachable to the common men in your region?
We want good governance, harmony in society around us, good infrastructure, regular clean drinking water, functional health care centre, regular non-congested bus route to your region, good school with hygiene and mid-day meals facilities etc.
Think twice before casting your valuable vote because we are the one who seal their fate for good or bad. For God’s sake, don’t them with communal angle or for their money power but purely on their personal merit.
    Jai Hind!

Often a very controversial man but some time he speaks the truth too. If BJP takes the cognizance of opposing Gadkari to continue as BJP Party President and objection to appointment of CBI Chief then we have to support Jethmalani no doubt. But as a Party discipline if any one dares to expel them, then any Party have no choice but to expel such person with immediate effect. What a tragedy in BJP Party, person who has been opposed by almost all top leaders to continue as Party Chief expelling someone who is opposing his Party Post. So, all iz not well in BJP too

BJP high command doesn't know what they are doing, very foolish act. Real reason to suspend Jetmalani could be that, he went against Gadkari few weeks ago. Other wise, BJP is not a desciplinary party any more, there is no much difference between BJP and Congress now.

I dont like Jetrhmalani or his politics since 1977 March, since Janata Party came to power for the first time...he is a publicity crazy "Kari Coat" thinking he is "Omini Potent" and "Omni Present" we call this as "Kari Coat synndrome"...many successful lawyers including Kapil Sibal exibit this syndrome.

Now talking about Gadkari,,, totally unfit to be BJP National President,,, whoever sits on that chair after Gadkari,,, should wash it with "Gangajal" to prify it before sitting on it....

Till now I dont know why RSS wants Gadkari to be BJPs national president... there are many people with charecter and Integrity in BJP who can sit in that Chair with honour..

I wont even give "Dog Walkers" job to Gadkari leave alone BJPs National Presidentship....

Perhaps, if BJP's low command was this defiant in their stand to take action on its indisiplined partymen, no matter what is the impact within 24hrs in their earlier crisis, during induction of one time Congi henchmen Sriramulu as a package along with Reddy brothers to the party, Yeddi-Reddy's Saga, businessmen Reddy's party hijack politics & funding of unethical practice of O-Kamala just to strong foundation to their stay in power with induction people who believed in joining BJP just with the intention of some earning some Vitamin -M($) rather than accepting the party’s principles & joining it, during aiding & defending to its gangrene infected leg, the Karnataka state unit, Ghadkari's affair with Yeddi & his Prasaadha, & finally when a partymen in Karnataka who once begged votes in the name of Atal Bihari Vajpayee & then once powered the party to the Govt, then held the party’s image at stake by dictating terms to this low command that its him the “Godfather” of Karnataka BJP, not once not twice but number of times even now when the this pawn who a robot & timed bomb rigged by the Congress to split the Karnataka BJP to come back to power, perhaps the sad state of the party which is hoping to sit in the driver’s seat in upcoming Loksabha polls would have been more bright in its failed attmept to fight the most corrupt & looter family driven party which has taken & is still taking India on a ride by using its citizen’s weakness’s. This is not a high command, but like I said a “low command".

JETHMALANI IS A HONEST PERSON. HE DID NOT SHARE ANY LOOTED MONEY BY GADGARI, THEREFORE HE OPENLY ASKED GADKARI’S RESIGNATION.

THIS IS THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO PLACE IN THE BJP FOR THE HONEST PERSONS.

YEDDYURAPPA ALSO ONCE PRAISED SONIA, BUT NO ACTION TAKEN, EVEN HE HAS SLAPPED ON THE FACE OF BJP BY ANNOUNCING THAT HE IS LAUNCHING A NEW REGIONAL PARTY.

THERE WILL BE NO EFFECT IF, THE BJP LOSESS JETHMALANI, HE IS NOT THE VOTE BANK SPOILER. WHEREAS YEDDYURAPPA WILL DEFINITELY SPOIL THE VOTERS IN KARNATAKA.

Congress is any time better. BJP do not have guts till now to take action Yedirappaa but they have taken action against Jethmalani because he stood for values. Any time old RSS stalwarts are better as they have sacrificed and built the party not the young ones who reap and enjoy. Also discarding the old pillars. This will back fire BJP very badly.
