Mumbai, Nov 18 (IANS) : Lakhs of people paid last tributes to their beloved leader and Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray here Sunday as his mortal remains were consigned to the flames. Thackeray's son Uddhav lit the pyre at 6.17 p.m.

Uddhav's cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj stood by him in support as Thackeray's mortal remains were consigned to the flames.

Uddhav was an epitome of composure and dignity as he lit the funeral pyre of his father. He had earlier broken down at the beginning of the funeral procession.

Amidst the chanting of holy mantras, while conducting the last rites, Uddhav led Raj by his hand, implying they be together during the sad moment, just as his father wished since the past few months.

However, only minutes before the funeral pyre was lit, Raj broke down, with tears streaming down his cheeks.

The public cremation of Thackeray is a first for Mumbai and he was cremated with full state honours, including a gun salute.

A sea of humanity poured out on all roads leading to Dadar's Shivaji Park in central Mumbai where the funeral procession reached seven hours after it started from Matoshri, the Thackeray residence seven kms away.

Thackeray's personal physician Jalil Parkar was present during his last rites all throughout. It was a rare honour for this Muslim doctor who had come to be an important fixture of the Thackeray family. Parkar has been the personal physician of the family since the last four years.

Many VVIPs including businessmen, politicians and members of the Hindi and Marathi films industries marked their presence to pay their final tribute to Thackeray. Senior leaders from all regional and national political parties were present to pay their last respects to the leader popularly known as The Tiger.

Security arrangements at levels never before seen were put in place since Saturday. According to conservative estimates by the Mumbai police, over 19 lakh people, including those gathered at the Shivaji Park, bid adieu to Thackeray. Around two lakh people followed Thackeray's funeral procession.

Prashanth and Dev Sagar, Mangalore, I endorse your views completely. Most of the people showed respect to him out of fear and not genuine love. Siv sainiks are at par with our Bajrang Dal in matters of destruction and rampage is concerned.

shahnawaz kukkikatte, dubai/udupi who told you that Kannadigas, mangaloreans and udupi people are against Bal Saheb. Only a few brain washed dont like him. Bal Saheb was not against south indians or hindi people. He was only against trouble makers and anti nationalists, but paid media channels are giving it a different colour for that.

Thackaray's always opposed illigal bangladeshis and pakis living in india...even he opposed legal work permit given to pak artist....why do we need them when there r plenty of talented singers and artist in india....his fight against biharis and north indians was because a bihari or UP graduate with 40% manage to become engineers and railways officer and get posted in mumbai...whereas a student from mumbai no matter what religion or cast he is from....even with 90% he has tough time to get admission in medical and engineering colleges......so is it fair on the families of children settled in mumbai.....whats wrong in opposing them....on the south indian issue....most of the rich rich hoteliers from south have business in mumbai and have survived....if not for bala saheb, mumbai would have been karachi back in seventies.....He stood by hindutva right from his carreer start till his end.....never changed his stand...unlike some politicians.

Whole of karnataka, udupi and mangalore were against Thackery when he was againt south Indians and wanted south indians to leave Mumbai.. where were you... Had you and your siblings got beaten by the goons of this fanatic, you would have realised. A true national is he who loves his countrymen, their culture and their contribution. There is no difference between you and the marathi ghatis.. Better eat tobacco and eat vada paon... Get lost who cares for your comments.. YOu people are good in beating your own fellow citizens in the name of religion, region, culture, language, dress etc etc We have still shameless creatures like you in our very neighbourhood.

There are hoast of people like you in this country against who he was fighting vehimently throughout.Thackray never changed his colours at any point of time like you people do now and then just a matter of pretention.Thackray was fearless, candid and clear in his policies people agree pr disagree. That is why his funeral was a record turnout from across the nation not seen in Indian hisstody, not even Gandhi or Nehru's death.Because his policies Mumbai is peaceful other wise it would be in piece. He stood for Maharastra/Marathis and never looked upon on caste oriented policies.Balasaheb willremain in the hearts of Mumbaikars for long long time. You peoples views does not matter for a tiger and his followers. You be in your line, do not change. We have no problem.

Today, a beggar who survives on Vada Paav will sleep empty stomach. A question of humanity, who should you feel sorry for, the poor or the dead? Mumbai is shut down not becoz of respect ..its becoz they r scared
Its a shame a Person who never respected another state who kept his religion before his country has been rolled in Tiranga after his death . Its a right for a soldier who dies for his country Not a man who hated his own countrymen. Shame on you Indian Government.

Let ""Balasaheb"" rest in peace. He is no more and i do not see any point in saying bad things.Everyone has acted in a mature way, state gave him the honors and he was cremated at shivaji park. Sainiks did acted in a very disciplined way and we did not suffer. It was indeed a historic moment to see such a huge crowd at his last rites. The bundh kind of environment did trouble us but i guess most of us must have stocked things ? day before itself.I think he went in good royal style but he should have stayed till the elections, but this is all gods will! Rest in peace sir and courage to your family.
