Real Madrid Beat Celta Vigo 2-0

Madrid, Oct 21 (IANS): Real Madrid produced a comfortable but ultimately disappointing display to defeat Celta Vigo 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium here.

A deflected shot from Gonzalo Higuain and a second half penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo were enough to give a lacklustre Madrid all three points against a rival which did little to threaten the Madrid goal, reports Xinhua.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho Saturday opted not to draft B-team players into his side despite the injuries to fullbacks, Marcelo, Fabio Coentrao and Alvaro Arbeloa. Instead he played Michael Essien at left back and Sergio Ramos on the right.

He was, however, more adventurous in midfield where Kaka, Luka Modric and Mesut Ozil were all in the starting 11.

The result was that Real Madrid had just about full control of the ball in the first 45 minutes and took the lead after 12 minutes when Gonzalo Higuain's shot took a wicked deflection to beat Celta goalkeeper Sergio, who was playing for Javi Varas absent with a virus.

Sergio Ramos and Ronaldo both saw chances go missing, before Iago Aspes was denied an equalizer by Madrid keeper, Iker Casillas.

Madrid appeared to take their foot off the gas, but Ronaldo still hit the bar with a chipped shot and then hit a shot into the side netting before the break.

Mourinho reacted at half time replacing the disappointing Kaka with Angel de Maria to try and inject pace into his side.

Madrid continued to control the game, but without creating clear chances against a side that was content to avoid a heavy defeat.

Ronaldo doubled Madrid's lead from the penalty spot with just over 20 minutes remaining. Ozil exaggerated a slight contact in the penalty area from Celta fullback Dani Mallo and Ronaldo sent Sergio the wrong way from the stop to seal the points.
