Hayden Doesn't Think Tendulkar Should Get Order of Australia

Melbourne, Oct 19 (PTI): Upset at Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar getting the Order of Australia, former batsman Matthew Hayden said the honour should be "exclusive" to his countrymen.

"Now, if Sachin was living in Australia -- give him the Prime Minister's gong I reckon -- but the reality of it is he's living in India," Hayden told a radio show.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the honour for Tendulkar during a recent visit to India.

Hayden, who is also a former recipient of the title, said only Australians should be conferred with such awards as they are about national honour.

"I think it should be exclusive to Australians...I'm not so sure. There's things that are sacred amongst our country," Hayden said.

"I kind of understand the point of the fact that he has been such an iconic figure here in Australia and there's an enormous population of Indians that are working here and living here very happily and in harmony with Australia that have naturalised and I think that's a great part of our country, how multi-cultural that we are," he explained.

Tendulkar is only the second Indian after former attorney general Soli Sorabjee to get the honour.

    Why dont u commentators misssed to understand the fact that it done on apolitical basis as it decalred by the politician for to get benefit for his political gain!! poor we still dont understand its not to prove sachin but inorder to have other hidden agenda. People like Hayden should come out and openly expose such work done by their politician to gain political milage.

    The PM of a country is better d than his countrymen and he knows his Job well as to whom he has to confer what. There were other non-Australians conferred with this very award earlier which includes Brian Lara. If something good happens to someone, why should it be battled over. Poor & Silly Hayden. To blame the PM of a country without knowing the fact is incorrect. Congrats to the Iconic Tendulkar for winning the hearts of not only Indians, but other countrymen as well. Wish You many more laurels Sachin.

    Giving Order of Australia to Cricket star Sachin is nothing but a great honor to Australia itself. Australia giving award not to a ordinary person, Sachin is a Icon of world cricket. He is loved by billions of cricket fans all over the world more than any cricketer. If any country including Austria giving their prestigious award to Sachin means they are honoring themselves. Don't under estimate Sachin, whole cricket world knows fact that the record set by him very difficult to break.

    Agree with Hayden and Anand, if it is called "Order of Australia" then why confer it to any other than Australians and secondly Sachin has been the best Cricketer(Batsman) the world has ever produced, but not anymore, he is not the same as he used to be 10-15 years back,he should have bid farewell to the game on a high and one has to be consistent in performance,he should have ended his career on the same note he started his career with...!Probably it is a diplomatic move by the Australians to improve relations with India!

    I agree with Hayden. Its wrong to give that award for Sachin. Award should be given to only Australians, since its their national award.

    Suppose if PM/President of India decides to give Arjuna award or Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to an Australian, we Indians will also feel that heat because its our national award. There will be a uproar in India.

    Sachin should deny this award before it gets worse, because it is their national award.

    Don't compare Bharath ratna to OOA.Maybe OOA is like Ramon Magsaysay award...can be given to anyone not necessarily an Australian.

    I tend to agree with Hayden. I do not understand the point of Sachin (or whosoever, other than an Australian) getting the order of Australia. If it's about national honour, an Australian national should be the exclusive recepient of such awards.
