Madrid, Oct 12 (IANS): The Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) confirmed it had paid 11.50 euros (9.30 pounds) for damage to two apartments in the Olympic Village in London caused by members of the Spanish basketball team.

The damage was caused following Spain's 100-107 defeat by the US in the final of the basketball competition, a result that condemned Spain to the silver medal for the second time in consecutive Olympic Games, reports Xinhua.

The representative of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Cayetano Cornet had to pay for the damage as he controlled the team's departure from the Village April 13, the day after the closing ceremony of the Games, 24 hours after the basketball final.

The damage was apparently caused in two separate apartments, although the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) Thursday issued a statement denying knowledge of the affair, insisting the FEB "has not received communication from the International Olympic Committee or the COE over any kind of incident."

The FEB insists the Spanish basketball team is "an example of behaviour and compromise with the values of the sport as they show every year, both in social programs that the team supports as in the campaigns developed individually by the majority of the players."

However, the organisation has promised an investigation into the incident, "with the intention of clearing up the incidents that have been attributed to the members of the team."
