Catholics Protest their Portrayal in Bollywood Films

Mumbai, Sep 27 (IANS): Catholic groups Wednesday protested the portrayal in bad light of the clergy and community in Bollywood movies, with specific reference to "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamal" and "Kya Super Kool Hai Hum".

In a flash protest, starting from St. Peter's Church in suburban Bandra in northwest Mumbai, over 100 representatives of five groups took out a procession to Indian Motion Picture Producers (IMPPA) and Film Makers Combine (FMC) office a few kilometres away.

The protestors belonged to the Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC), Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), Maharashtra Christian Youth Forum (MCYF), Catholic Residents Organisation for Social Services (CROSS) and Catholics for Preservation of Faith (CPF).

The groups demanded that the objectionable scenes be deleted from "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal", where a priest is depicted dancing. The protestors were angered by the use of Catholic imagery in the films, and the portrayal of men in the community as a bunch of drunkards, while women were depicted as being of easy virtue.

They also demanded that a representative appointed by the Archdiocese of Mumbai be nominated on the censor board to vet movies that depict the Catholic community.

They pointed out that allowing "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal" without clearance from the community amounted to adding insult to injury, as the film mocks and ridicules the faith. The groups have therefore decided to file FIRs against all concerned for hurting religious sentiments.

A delegation had earlier met Pankaja Thakur, CEO of the censor board, along with Fr. Reuben Tellis, the Catholic Church representative, but was disappointed by the response.

The protestors Wednesday demanded the resignation of Pankaja Thakur, and also sought the resignation of Leela Samson, chairperson of the Central Board of Film Cetification (CBFC).

The groups have called for the closure of the Mumbai office of the censor board, claiming that it was no more than a lobby of the film industry, insensitive to the sentiments of the community.

Representatives of the IMPPA and FMC accepted the memorandum submitted by the protestors, assuring them of greater self-restraint. The protestors were also assured that a communication to this effect would be sent to the film fraternity, seeking that they abstain from hurting religious sentiments.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PRODUCERS HAS TO TAKE MOVIES LIKE THIS AND HURT OTHER RELIGIONS SENTIMENTS?

WE HAVE SEEN IN MANY MOVIES, MOST OF THE VILLAN'S NAME ARE GIVEN CATHOLICS LIKE ROBERT, RONY ETC. WEARING CROSS SYMBOL IS COMMON IN MOVIES.
THERE IS NO RESPECT FOR OUR RELIGION. ALL SHOULD WAKE UP AND FIGHT TO BAN THIS Kamaal Dhamaal Malamal" and "Kya Super Kool Hai Hum".

We need to introspect ourselves, and learn to take it positively as what is depicted is not out of reality. Is it not true that all those movies in the past used the church buildings and cemetaries were allowed by the church leaders for some consideration. People should realise that the churches have become business centres. It would deem fit for us to clean our homes rather than blaming others who tell us that our house is not clean. We should rather be happy that somebody by portraying us that way is highlighting the great need for change.

Like Politicians, Film Producers also are shameless. Their own children entetain the world in semi naked clothes and their parents, brothers, uncles are proud of them. These people are nothing but animals, leading a meaningless life.

The world is already in turmoil with the Muslims protesting over a film made in America. Now it's India. We are living in a democratic country and its just a movie. People watch the movie and forget it after a while. If we are offended that means our faith is not strong. Jesus said "Forgive them for they do not know what they are doing" Christianity means peace and love.

The great learned Hindu Philosopher, Swami Vivekananda said:
"All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything."
"Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way."
"Our duty is to encourage everyone in his struggle to live up to his own highest idea, and strive at the same time to make the ideal as near as possible to the Truth."
"The moment I have realized God sitting in the temple of every human body, the moment I stand in reverence before every human being and see God in him - that moment I am free from bondage, everything that binds vanishes, and I am free."
"The more we come out and do good to others, the more our hearts will be purified, and God will be in them."
"Truth can be stated in a thousand different ways, yet each one can be true."
"We are what our thoughts have made us so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live they travel far."
"Where can we go to find God, if we cannot see Him in our own hearts and in every living being?"
"You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself."
"You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul."
If people would mind their own religion, I think the world would be a much peaceful place. How many wars have we experienced over the years in the name of religion? There are too many to count.
What we need today is a respectfulness of other religions. think about it!

Noel F Lewis, Kinnigoli/Dubai...appriciate your broad minded View. If people start protesting for such silly matters, almost every second day people should be on streets shouting slogans. Come on guys this is just a entertainment flick and scene or not valgur or bad mouth'd like Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat's speech. At the end of the day the motive behind the scene is just to bring a smile to the tired souls who spend their daily life in HATE fighting within themselves and fighting with others. Atleast in India this has not crossed the LINE. If people would have protested for much more cross lineed humor in movies like Eurotrip-2004 & the way they showed Vatican, Pope Jon Paul would have had heart attack long back and there would have been world war by now the way how some American Rom-Coms potray, Vatican, nuns, Indian Guru's (as tantric/love sex guru) or these stand ip comedies with the jokes they make of Arabs. In India , cince the time of Chandraswami, and present days swamiji's interference in politics, A swami is always potrayed in a negative role where his Ashram is showing running a prositiute racket or using drugs storage etc. Mullas are shown plotting bomb plans even in comedy flicks, Hindhu gods are printed in Underwears and walked on the ramp in the name of new fashion line from India. Christian's are shown as heavy drinkers from longtime back all just a to add some masala or fun Humor to the movies. Unless this has crossed the line, i dont think one should give much importance to all these and cause any law and order problem as otherwise we are already fed up with this corrupted system. Common Indians, dont turn our country into religious fanatisemic state.

If Sikhs would have taken unkindly to the jokes we have made about them ,all of us would be guilty of defamation. Every time I laugh at one of Sardar jokes it also reminds me of their contribution to India.
Its what we do that makes us not what others say.If we learn to laugh at ourselves it enhances our virtue.

Thank God, atlast our Catholic community raised their voices, better late than never. This should have been done many years ago. We Catholics are always potrayed in hindi movies either as drunkards or happy go lucky types. Moreover, most of the shooting is done in the cementry, and it looks like only catholic ghosts are roaming to take revenge in the world, etc., this is utter nonsence. Priests and Nuns are always targeted. In future, they should make sure our religious sentiments are not hurt, just because we keep quiet, it doesn't mean we are cool. How other religions wake up and fight for their religion. Continue to fight or else this may continue, no one has the right to mock one's religion. May God protect us and our churches.

Really Good Move. All Catholics should join together in fighting for this cause. Our Priests have done valuable service to the society and are doing a wonderful job all over the world. They come from our own houses and families.

We should not allow anyone to raise a finger on them. The Mockery of priest is shown in very bad light. I fully support this move to file an FIR against the producers and directors of the film.

At last the Christian community seems to have woken up from its deep slumber, though "It's better late than never." This kind of bashing has been taking place right from the start, and besides drunkards & vamps, even most of the villains have Christian names. Why is it so ? It's because all this while Christians have taken it lying down, and the Church has also allowed free & easy access into the Church for filming. The Church is only a place of worship & prayer to the Almighty and not a place for providing entertainment in the name of a hero or heroine pledging love for one another in the sacred precincts of the Church. One hopes atleast now, the Church will be more vigilant in not allowing entry to the film crew to desecrate and defile the sanctity of the Church. Will our LORD be honoured by this ?

    Dear All,
Please do not get panic when these kind of movies come. They are for entertainment purpose. If they portrait something the reality of any religion doesn't change. The more you criticize anything the more it becomes greater.
Catholics are not minor they are in majority all the world. Even there (Hollywood) by our own people Christianity has been wrongly portrayed in several films like "The Da-Vinci Code" "Jesus Camp" "Priest" and many more.

Catholics regards a priest as a holyman and he is having high respect among the christian community. Even Other community people too give them high respect. But filmakers insulting priest, holy water, christian symbols is very bady taste. Filmakers showing them in bad character because then take us for granted. They dont have guts to do such things with other community.
