Juventus Stay on Top with Win over Chievo

Rome, Sep 23 (IANS): Thanks to Fabio Quagliarella's brace, Juventus beat Chievo 2-0 at home to stay on top of Italian football league Serie A.

If it had not been for the the heroics of Chievo's goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino, the margin of victory might have been much greater for the defending champions Saturday, reports Xinhua.

Quagliarella, who scored Juve's vital equaliser against Chelsea in the Champions League Wednesday, made sure they picked up four league victories from as many games in the new season.

The win sees Juve pull three points clear at the top of the table, although the teams below them have a game in hand.

Massimo Carrera, the stand-in Juventus coach in place of suspended Antonio Conte, was impressed by the "patience" Juventus showed in breaking down Chievo.

"We had some very positive responses from the game," he said.

"It wasn't easy against Chievo as they closed down well but we showed patience. There are still a few things to improve and work on but our team commanded the initiative even after going 2-0 up."

Chievo coach Mimmo Di Carlo just had to shrug and accept "Juventus proved they were superior".

"Juventus proved they were superior. We tried to contain them but then they stepped up the gear and deserved the victory. We also should've done better but despite last week's defeat to Lazio my team went out there in a solid and united way," said Di Carlo.

Elsewhere, 10-man Parma salvaged a last-gasp 1-1 draw against Fiorentina.

Fiorentina's new Argentinian defender Facundo Roncaglia scored his first goal in Italy with a stunning first-half strike before Jaime Valdes missed the chance to level from the penalty spot.

Aleandro Rosi received his marching orders for the home side two minutes from time, only for Stevan Jovetic to miss the resulting penalty.

Parma withstood a heavy onslaught and were rewarded as Valdes redeemed himself deep into stoppage time following substitute Luca Toni's handball.

Matias Fernandez saw his ambitious effort cut out before La Viola made the breakthrough after just 20 minutes.

Having pushed upfield, Roncaglia gathered the ball just outside the area, smashing the ball off Antonio Mirante's palm and into the top corner.
