Mangalore, Sep 20: As the festival season begins in Karnataka, the streets of Mangalore are seen with the tiger dance performers which is unique to only southern India.

Each of the districts have a different style of painting done on the body.  The body paintings are resemble the skin of a leopard, tiger or cheetah.

Tiger dance, locally known as the ‘Pili Vesha’ is a unique form of folk dance especially in Dakshina Kannada that fascinates everyone regardless of their age.

The significance of the tiger is being the carrier of Godess Sharada. Some of the dancers perform breathtaking somersault flips. Young men including some of the children form the troupe of the tiger dance.

The grand pilivesha performance is preceded by a long body painting session which takes about 6 to 8 hours as various layers are to be painted.

The grand finale at some places involves the artists forming a human pyramid. Although the performers religiously take part in all the celebration, it is also a time for some of them to earn some extra money during the holiday season of Dasara.

This kind of dance form is usually found during processions where large numbers of people gather.

The artists go to different places, houses perform the dance and in return they are provided with monetary benefits. The dance is accompanied by familiar drum beats which adds more amusement to the dance form.

Sometimes there will be one or two "pregnant" pilis - that is pilis with big bellies doing the pilivesha. Nowadays everybody is health conscious, and very rarely we see fat pilis these days.

I am a lover of dance and Pili vesha is my favorite. Thanks Daiji for bringing back my sweet childhood memories. Our area was famous for pili vesha. The then great artists Pili Rama,Laxmana,Pili Muthappa,Pili Seetharama all hail from Bejai. There was no challenge for Pilli Rama and Laxmana.Their steps were mind blowing.Catching the live sheep with the mouth by Pili Muthappa was a great show."Thel Bugguna" to pick up money was amazing.Few of the present participants should be belonging to these old pili families
Gone are the days. But preserve this rich tradition for ever.

These people are performing dangerous acrobatic acts without proper safety measures.Dancing & jumping on the ground and on the rough road which is so dangerous even a small mistake will cause big injury. I have seen once one of the dancer while dancing stamped on the broken glass chip and hurt his feet . If these kind of shows arranged in a place with proper safety measures then this will be a great entertainement to both the sides.

    Dr.S Kamath
The Gun (Bedi)holder is not in Pili Vesha, The Gun holder is in the Karadi Vesha. You are confusing the entire Pili Vesha Dance with the Karadi Vesha. You need to have a good look at the dance then just commenting.

Yes, it reminds me of my childhood days. I too was a keen observer. But during those days "pilis" had only one colour, but the present "pilis" have different colour, just like our politicians.
