Tendulkar Should go out on a High: Imran

New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS): Legendary Pakistan captain Imran Khan has advised India's batting great Sachin Tendulkar not be at the mercy of the selectors and asked him to quit international cricket on a high.

Calls for 39-year-old Tendulkar's retirement from international cricket got stronger after the batting maestro was bowled thrice in a row during the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand.

Imran said if he was in Tendulkar's position he would have left cricket on a high.  "Sachin is such a great player but I can only say if I were in his position, I would want to leave on a high and my greatest worry was that I should never be at the mercy of the selectors," Imran was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Asked if Tendulkar could ever be at the mercy of the selectors, Imran said: "No, but why put yourself in such a position. I mean Sachin, what a brilliant record he has. Would he not want to?"

Imran said what worries him is whether Tendulkar can perform to the best of his potential. "Again I put myself in that position, my greatest worry was that I would not be able to perform best to my abilities. So people will not remember me for when I was at the peak but when I was leaving my career," he said.

"I think Sachin is such a great player and people are emotionally attached. I can understand the Indian public, who has been watching him for 23 years. They can't imagine life without Sachin. But from Sachin's point of view, knowing that the kind of pride that he takes in his cricket. There must be a time when he should decide that this is the right time to leave," Imran added.

Imran said he retired after leading Pakistan to triumph in the 1992 World Cup because he wanted to go out at his peak. "The reason I retired was because I did not want to be at the mercy of the selectors. I wanted to go out at my peak. The only reason I kept playing was for the cancer hospital. The board of governance told me that if you get out of cricket you won't be able to collect money. That's the only reason for which I kept playing. Having seen those heights, I just did not want to be at the mercy of selectors or people saying it's the time you should leave," he said.

Imran said he has immense respect for Sunil Gavaskar because he left cricket when he was on peak. "That's why I respect Sunil Gavaskar. He left, he could have gone on. Sunil had one of the best defensive techniques I have seen in a batsman. Given that technique, he could have gone on but he left at the peak," he said.

Can you throw your parents out of the house because they are old ? - Jaimini P.B.

What a worst comparison? Jamini you are comparing orange with rotten orange. Parent's love and sacrifice cannot be compared to Sachin. Sachin is a selfish cricketer who wanted government to waive tax on imported luxury vehicle. What you can expect from him?

Sachin is dreaming of playing international cricket till 2015. all our comments are reaching deaf ears. neither sachin nor BCCI is interested in his retirement. this cricket crazy nation will soon start talking negative about cricket. how I wish and pray atleast few of us start diverting our attention from cricket to other sporting games.

Each and every athlete has his or her own choice in making the decision when to quit and why to quit. Winning is not everything.

Whether it is Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods whether it is John Mackinrow or Lod Laver whether it is Magic Johnson or Kareem Abdul Jabar - each one has their own triumphs and glories, and each one has their own choices and desires in life.

It is our desire that one day Imran Khan should replace Zardari and become the President or the Prime Minister of Pakistan. We have had a chance of meeting Imran at a luncheon gathering in Houston, Texas. Iran does have the Presidential substance and perhaps he would be a good leader when Sachin Tendulkar will be sworn in some day as a member of Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha. This is one way to save the world with identical qualities of life.

2.Sachin has been taking burden on his shoulder for the past 2 decades! He played some stunning cricket which normal human being can't dream in his life.Once Sachin leaves cricket,I bet people will watch either hockey or kabaddi.
3.Can you throw your parents out of the house because they are old ? pls remember your father protected you till you stood on your own feet. Some people keep parents in old age home or anathashram.Same mentality people are asking Sachin to go.Because he is useless now like old father! my dear friends,Sachin's presence is enough to upset opposition team.!

    Is Tendulkar great?
Tendulkar has never been a great match winner like viv, sehwag, dhoni, gilchrist, hayden and many others. His knowcks were slower and he played for personal records than for the team. he would over defend when reaching his 100s at the cost of the team which the whole world has seen. What makes sachin a sachin is a)bombay mafia,b) there is a huge money invested on him by corporates and corporates do not want him to go c) a few insane fans from India.
Just think if sachin represented australia, he would have been kicked out long long back. At this ripe old age of 40 sachin is continuing to play for no other reason than a)increasing his personal records so that others eliminating them are reduced b)misusing the over empathy by Indian public c) remain in limelight as long as possible d)Increase his personal wealth through ads.

jamini usually I agree with most of ur comments, but with Sachin for sure no, had he been not from Mumbai, he would have been gone long ago, or atleast the thackery's would have barked, but now everyone is feel ashamed to say anything, for every person there is a time limit, how many upcoming talented players have been destroyed at the expense of form, and pakistan, No never they have very good talent, politics aside, they are not afraid of Sachin, Yes for sure Indira Ghandi but not sachin, now when u look at Sachin, u feel sleepy, or think of ur grandfather, its high time for him to go out with respect, he still thinks the nation adores him which is just a joke, all marathis, never give up be it lata, Asha, Sachin, they never want other to blossom, they will die with their profession, hope sense prevail

Imran is absolutely right on this matter. Sachin has played enough cricket and added enough feathers on his cap. He was always interested in making and breaking records than playing as an unselfish player. We have many excellent, young upcoming cricketers, and its time for them to get a chance to show their ability.

I think Sachin has played enough. He may say that still there is lot of cricket left in him and he would go on and on till he gets exhausted. In cricket the batsman can get out with the first ball he plays or may play a great game, nothing could be predicted. If he plays for another 10-15 years (???) he might score couple of 50's or 100's now and then. What will happen if one gives up when he reaches a certain height? There are lots of youngsters waiting to get into Indian Cricket Team. If people like Sachin keep playing for ages those youngsters will be deprived of the opportunity. Many play only till Ranji Trophy and get out from there waiting with a dream to get into Indian team. It is not so difficult to 10-15 players for the team with such a populated country like India. I feel Sachin should say "good bye" with a smiling face for the people to remember him in the years to come. Media has already communicated to the people about him and before it becomes too late he should.......... In India Cricket is a rich game where the players want to play for fame as well as money. Let the youngsters get an opportunity........

I respect Imran Khan and his views. Imran was a captain at par during his cricketing tenure. I wish he become the next President of Pakistan. As far as Sachin Tendulkar is concerned I guess he is not getting the message loud and clear. One of the cricket commentator suggested that he should play some domestic cricket after 3 cheap dismissals in the recently concluded New Zealand series at home. As Imran and other commentators rightly said the ors cannot Sachin. Perhaps Sachin has one more record in his mind!! open with his son!!

I totally agree that Tendulkar should resign at his high peak. Because he will be 40 soon. Even a new bowler knows how to pluck the wicket of Tendulkar.... Right time to Quit.... There are tooo.... many youngsters... waiting to bat as a opener in one day match and even in Test..... therefore, Boss take a rest and give the chance to the next...My Last words to the Great Batsman Sir "Success is a Journey not a destination"

I have great respect for Imran. His knowledge about the game is immense. He has a keen eye for talent. If not for him Pakistan would never had Akram & Inzamam. What he is saying is absolutely right. Players like Pujara should be calling Sachin 'Uncle'. If some bloke from the U-19 WC team should make it to the Indian team in the near future, they may even have to call him 'grandpa'. No player is indespensible, not even Sachin Tendulkar. The game is always bigger than any player.

the pits!! Really Indira was the
only 'Sher' in her Cabinet throughout. Sachin 'used' to roar like a 'Sher' but now 'mews' like a famine stricken 'cat'from Somalia! Sorry this is not what I feel, but a fact.

Jaimini, Sachin is a god of cricket, agreed, but he is a human afterall like all of us. His body would have taken a toll after 23 years of cricket and he should respect is body clock. He may be young at heart, but may not be so in his body. Its time he makes way to another youngster. Pls emulate Dravid and Laxman in this regard. He may be worried about loosing endorsements too!!

Imran Khan is absolutely right. But Sachin has decided that he will play until he is thrown out of Indian team. Sachin is a history now. He was a great batsmen but not anymore. Last few matches have proved that he is not capable of scoring runs and he is getting out "Bowled". He played enough for India and now this is the best time to hang his boots. He should follow Dravid and Laxman. If they wanted, they too could have played but they announced their retirement just before the home series against Newzealand.
