Yenepoya Institute awards degrees to 779 BCA graduates on first day of Graduation Day

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 29: The first day of the 7th Graduation Day 2026 of Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management (YIASCM), a constituent unit of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), witnessed 779 graduates from the BCA programmes receiving their degrees at the Yendurance Zone, Deralakatte.

The programme commenced with a prayer led by Mohammad Yaseer Sulthan, III B Com, invoking the blessings of the Almighty. Following the prayer, Prof Shareena P, vice principal and dean of the faculty of commerce and management, introduced the dignitaries and warmly welcomed the gathering, setting a celebratory tone for the graduation ceremony.

Delivering the keynote address, chief guest Prof Sharath Ananthamurthy, vice-chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shivamogga, emphasized the importance of integrity, ethics, and values in a world increasingly shaped by technology. He highlighted the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on communication, research, software development, and decision-making, encouraging graduates to use AI effectively while understanding its limitations and consequences. He urged them to consider both the practical benefits of AI and its wider social and ethical implications when applying it in their personal and professional lives.

He also stressed that education should go beyond acquiring information and technical skills by developing critical thinking, sound judgment, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Illustrating this point, he compared learning to swim through reading a manual with actually getting into the water. While a manual can explain the techniques, it cannot teach someone to swim without practical experience.

Through this example, he highlighted the importance of applying knowledge in real-life situations rather than relying solely on theoretical understanding. He further encouraged graduates to learn from people with diverse experiences and explore knowledge beyond textbooks. He concluded that the true purpose of education is to develop responsible, thoughtful, and adaptable individuals who can face the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Shri Gopalakrishna Bhat Kakunje, the guest of honour, began his address by congratulating the graduates, their parents and teachers on the successful completion of the programme. He observed that the world today is increasingly open and interconnected, offering graduates opportunities to pursue their ambitions and achieve their goals across the globe.

Speaking about the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), he noted that dependence on AI is increasing day by day. He expressed concern that excessive reliance on AI could weaken individuals’ problem-solving abilities and encouraged the graduates to use AI as an assistant rather than a substitute for independent thinking. He emphasised the importance of logical reasoning, smart work, and continuous skill development, pointing out that practical skills are often more valuable than academic scores alone. He further highlighted the importance of professional ethics and discipline, urging graduates to cultivate these qualities in their personal and professional lives. He reminded them that education is a lifelong process and encouraged them to remain committed to continuous learning.

He also stressed that graduates should never forget their parents and teachers, who played a vital role in shaping their lives, even when they move abroad for employment. He encouraged them to support their parents and contribute meaningfully to society, noting that such responsibilities earn respect and appreciation.

Concluding his address, he appreciated Yenepoya University for its contribution to education and suggested that the University develop an integrated syllabus that connects the academic curriculum with the industry ecosystem. He emphasised that such an initiative would help students gain practical exposure, enhance their employability, and access better career opportunities.

Guest of honour Dr B T Nandish, controller of examinations at Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), emphasized that a degree is not merely a certificate but a responsibility and a passport to new opportunities. He highlighted that technology, AI, and innovation are rapidly transforming every profession. He encouraged graduates to continue learning, upgrade their skills, and adapt to emerging technologies.

He further stressed that discipline, integrity, empathy, and respect for others distinguish successful individuals. He advised graduates that wherever they go, their character should speak louder than their qualifications. He emphasized honesty and responsibility as essential qualities for building meaningful relationships and achieving lasting success. He encouraged graduates to practice these values in their personal and professional lives, make the best use of available opportunities, and contribute positively to society.

During the event, Prof Jeevan Raj, principal, YIASCM, presented the annual report for 2025–2026, highlighting the institution’s academic achievements, major activities, and overall progress during the academic year. He acknowledged the dedication, perseverance, and hard work of the graduating students throughout their college journey and appreciated their achievements in academic and extracurricular activities.

He noted that their personal and academic development reflected the institution’s commitment to providing a supportive and enriching learning environment. He expressed pride in the institution’s role in nurturing future leaders and emphasized that the graduates were well prepared to face the challenges of the professional world with confidence, integrity, and responsibility.

He also recognized the valuable contributions of the faculty members, whose guidance and encouragement played an important role in student development. Furthermore, he highlighted the collaborative spirit of the college community and the continued efforts of the institution to promote academic excellence and holistic development. He concluded by congratulating the graduating students and encouraging them to apply the knowledge and values gained during their studies to achieve success in their future endeavours.

The ceremony was compered by Pinakini Shetty, assistant professor, department of commerce; Greeshma Poojary and Deepika, lecturers in the department of computer science; and Dr Deekshitha, assistant professor, department of humanities and social sciences, while Narayan Sukumar A, vice principal, proposed the vote of thanks.

The event was attended by heads of departments, ACOEs, teaching and non-teaching staff, parents, and guardians, and concluded with the National Anthem.
