Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 15: The School of Engineering, in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, celebrated National Innovation Day 2026 on Thursday, October 15, at the School of Engineering Seminar Hall. Organized under the patronage of vice chancellor Dr Praveen Martis SJ, the event commemorated the birth anniversary of former President of India and visionary scientist, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, aiming to foster a strong culture of ideation, interdisciplinary research, and technological entrepreneurship among students.

Delivering the keynote address as the chief guest, Dr Srikant N, associate dean, professor and head of the department of oral pathology and microbiology, and coordinator of the Center for Forensic Odontology at Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS), Mangaluru, highlighted the transformative convergence of engineering and medical science. An accomplished researcher and recipient of multiple Technology Innovation Awards, Dr Srikant emphasized the vital role engineers play in modern healthcare—from diagnostic tools and clinical equipment to forensic technology. He urged budding engineers to look beyond conventional academic boundaries, collaborate with healthcare professionals, and design affordable, real-world clinical solutions.

Presiding over the ceremony, Dr S Ruban, dean of the School of Engineering, addressed the gathering on the fundamental importance of an innovative mindset for engineers. Drawing inspiration from the humble yet visionary beginnings of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr Ruban illustrated how resourcefulness, perseverance, and indigenous problem-solving can propel a nation toward global leadership. He encouraged students to move from theoretical concepts to hands-on prototyping.

A major highlight of the event was the formal felicitation of the institution’s Innovation Ambassadors, recognizing their dedicated efforts in mentoring student innovators and driving IIC initiatives across the campus.

The programme was coordinated and convened by Dr Mohammed Siraj B, chair of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC). Chris Fernandes welcomed the gathering, while Madiha compered the proceedings. Faculty members, Innovation Ambassadors, and engineering students attended the session in large numbers.
