Hyderabad, Oct 13: The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) organised a walkathon and an awareness programme to mark World Thrombosis Day, highlighting the importance of preventing blood clots, recognising warning signs and seeking timely medical treatment.

The programme was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr Sandeep Mahapatra, Head of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at NIMS. NIMS Director Prof. Dr Rahul Devraj inaugurated the event.

The walkathon was held from 8 am to 9 am to raise public awareness about thrombosis, the importance of early detection and the need for timely medical intervention. An awareness programme carrying the slogan "Stop the Clot" was subsequently organised at the Learning Centre in the old NIMS building.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dr Rahul Devraj highlighted the serious health complications associated with thrombosis, a condition involving the formation of blood clots within blood vessels. He noted that such clots could lead to potentially life-threatening conditions, including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke and heart attacks.

He urged people not to ignore warning signs such as leg pain, swelling, difficulty breathing and chest pain, and advised them to seek medical attention promptly if such symptoms occurred.

The programme stressed the importance of understanding the risk factors associated with thrombosis, recognising its symptoms and obtaining timely medical advice to prevent serious complications.
