Mangaluru, Sep 30: In a tragic turn of events following the explosion and fire at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) on Wednesday afternoon, one person was found dead, while 12 other sustained burn injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Manish Karkada (20), a resident of Haleangadi.
According to the latest communique from MRPL, the fire, which broke out at around 12:20 pm, was successfully brought under control and completely extinguished by 2:47 pm. However, during the subsequent combing and inspection operations following the firefighting activity, the body of a deceased person was discovered at the affected site.
Another individual, who sustained burn injuries in the incident, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and is being provided necessary medical care.
As reported earlier, the fire was triggered by the rupture of a cold separator operating at high pressure in the Coker Hydrotreater Unit. Upon receiving the alert, the battery limits of the affected unit were immediately isolated, and MRPL's emergency response and firefighting teams swung into action to contain the blaze.

Mangaluru, Sep 30: An incident involving the rupture of a cold separator operating at high pressure in the Coker Hydrotreater Unit occurred at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) around noon on Wednesday September 30, resulting in a fire.
MRPL PRO Dr Rudolph said that the battery limits of the affected unit were isolated, and MRPL’s emergency response and firefighting teams actively engaged in controlling and dousing the fire. The fire was brought under control.
The firefighting operation continued for some time as part of the safe handling of the incident.
No major injuries were reported. There was no impact to operations.
"One person sustained minor injuries and was shifted to a hospital. The person is out of danger and is receiving the necessary medical attention. There is absolutely no reason to panic for individuals within and outside the MRPL premises. The situation is being closely monitored, with the safety of personnel and the facility being accorded the highest priority, Dr Rudolph said.
