FSSAI orders Wai Wai maker to halt production after noodles found on factory floor used in bhujia

New Delhi, Sep 4: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered CG Foods India, the maker of popular Wai Wai noodles, to stop manufacturing certain products after food safety inspectors allegedly found broken noodles collected from the factory floor being used to make bhujia, Reuters reported.

The action was taken at the company’s facility in Rajasthan. CG Foods India is part of CG Corp Global, led by Nepali billionaire Binod Chaudhary, who is widely known as the ‘Noodle King’ for building the Wai Wai instant noodle brand.

According to the FSSAI, inspectors found that the factory was reprocessing floor-collected broken noodles into bhujia without heat treatment. The investigation focused on two Wai Wai-branded bhujia products.

Authorities also seized nearly 32,000 kg of stock from the facility and found 1,925 boxes of expired finished products. The FSSAI said legal proceedings had been initiated against the food business operator and samples had been collected for testing.

The action comes amid a nationwide crackdown on food safety and hygiene violations at eateries, restaurants and food outlets.

Earlier, Maharashtra food safety officials raided a warehouse in Navi Mumbai and found nearly 5,000 cartons of consumer products, including items from major brands such as Nestle, Unilever, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. Officials alleged that expiry dates and nutrition labels had been altered, with chemicals and machines reportedly being used to remove and replace information on product packaging.

The seized products included Lay’s and Kurkure chips, Maggi Masala Noodles, Thums Up and Limca beverages, and Knorr Mushroom Soup.

Maharashtra FDA chief Tukaram Mundhe has also drawn attention for his strict enforcement approach. Last month, the FDA suspended the licences of four Domino’s Pizza outlets and one Pizza Hut outlet after a statewide inspection uncovered multiple violations.
