Beltangady, Sep 4: The brain mapping process in connection with the mysterious death of 15-year-old Sumanth from Sambolya near Gerukatte is underway, with the scientific tests on his brother and two uncles now complete.
The brain mapping of Sumanth's brother, Sudarshan, was conducted at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Madiwala, Bengaluru, on August 28. Following this, tests were conducted on his uncles, Radhakrishna on August 29, and Lakshminarayana on September 1. Sudarshan, an engineering student in Nitte, underwent the procedure for approximately four hours. Radhakrishna, a priest from Perla, and Lakshminarayana, a cook from Kasargod, were tested for about three hours each. All three have since returned to their hometown.
Earlier, on August 10 and 11, the first phase of questioning was held at the FSL in Madiwala for Sumanth's father Subrahmanya Nayak, mother Rathnavathi, brother Sudarshan, and uncles Radhakrishna and Lakshminarayana. Subrahmanya Nayak, a farmer, and Rathnavathi, a homemaker, were not subjected to the brain mapping process.
Sumanth, a talented ninth-standard student of the Gerukatte Government High School and a resident of Sambolya in Odilnala village, was found dead under suspicious circumstances. On the early morning of January 14, 2026, he had left home to attend the 'Dhanu pooja' at the Nala Sri Durgaparameshwari temple. His lifeless body was later discovered in a neighbouring pond.
Suspecting a well-planned murder, the police had formed a special team to investigate the case. However, as the mystery remained unsolved despite rigorous efforts, the police resorted to narco analysis and brain mapping as a final measure. Investigating officer and circle inspector Ravi B S obtained permission from the court to conduct these scientific tests.
Having completed the tests on the family members, the police department has decided to conduct brain mapping on other suspects. Sumanth's father, Subrahmanya Nayak, who has expressed confidence in the police investigation, has urged the authorities to ensure that the suspects are also subjected to brain mapping following the tests on the family members.
