Mumbai, Aug 26: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) seized and destroyed 48,166 kg of meat in Mumbai between April 2025 and March 2026 as part of its food safety enforcement drive, with bovine meat accounting for nearly 90 per cent of the total.
The seizures were carried out over concerns including illegal slaughter and transportation as well as unhygienic handling of meat. The seized material included 43,498 kg of bovine meat, 4,081 kg of fish, 41 kg of chicken, 33 kg of goat meat and 3 kg of pork.
The civic body also seized 510 kg of animal skin, which is used in leather products.
In addition, BMC teams seized 59,965 live animals during the year in cases linked to illegal slaughter and sale at unauthorised locations.
Of the live animals seized, 59,062 were hens, while 903 were goats and sheep, according to civic data.
