Udupi, Aug 4: The ICYM Pangla unit of St John the Evangelist Parish, Pangla, Shankarpura, successfully conducted the qualifying audition rounds for the 21st Diocesan-Level Konkani Singing Contest on Sunday, August 2, at the Parish Community Hall. The grand finale of the prestigious competition is scheduled to be held on October 25, 2026, at St. John's Sabha Bhavan, Shankarpura.
For over two decades, for the past 21 years, the ICYM Pangla unit has been organising this renowned annual competition, providing a premier platform for Konkani vocal talent from across the diocese. This year's auditions witnessed an overwhelming response, with more than 260 enthusiastic participants competing across various age categories. Over 260 singers participated in ICYM Pangla's 21st Diocesan Konkani Singing Contest auditions.
The auditions commenced with a warm welcome by ICYM president Vion Mathias. ICYM secretary Brenol Martis introduced the judges for the morning session. Renowned musicians Denzil Pereira, Prithuma Monteiro, and Simone Angela Monteiro.
The event was organised under the guidance of parish priest Fr Dr Prakash Anil Castelino, assistant priest Fr Jessel Cutinha CSC, ICYM animator Anitha D'Souza, Br Liston Gonsalves, and ICYM advisor Adv Jeevan Pereira.
A notable feature of this year's competition was the introduction of two separate adult categories by dividing the former 15–60 years category into 15–35 years and 35–60 years, for both men and women, allowing for more balanced competition.
The afternoon session continued with ICYM vice president Fiddle Alva introducing the panel of judges, comprising renowned musicians Jaison Leroy Pereira (Shirthady), Valenteena Castelino (Shirthady), and Senet Dcunha (Mundkur).
Auditions were conducted in the following categories:
Below 10 years (Boys and Girls – Solo)
10–15 years (Boys and Girls – Solo)
15–35 years (Men and Women – Solo)
35–60 years (Men and Women – Solo)
Above 60 years (Men and Women – Solo)
The top performers from each category earned their place in the grand ginale, where they will compete for the diocesan title on October 25, 2026.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by ICYM secretary Brenol Martis.
Having successfully upheld the prestige and credibility of this competition for 21 consecutive years, the ICYM Pangla unit continues to promote Konkani music and encourage talented singers across the diocese through the unwavering support of the parish priests, animators, participants, and generous parishioners of Pangla.
