Glasgow, Aug 1: India's impressive campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued as judoka Yamini Mourya won the silver medal in the women's 57 kg event, adding to the country's growing medal tally.

The 28-year-old missed out on the gold after losing the final to England's Acelya Toprak, who secured victory by Ippon.

Yamini's silver came after fellow Indian judokas Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh scripted history by winning gold medals in their respective events, underlining India's strong performance in judo at the Games.

In the final, Toprak dominated the early stages and briefly trapped Yamini in a strong hold before the Indian managed to break free. The contest eventually went into the golden score period, where Yamini received her third shido penalty, resulting in her disqualification and handing the gold medal to her English opponent.

Despite the disappointment, Yamini expressed pride in winning a medal for the country while admitting she had hoped to finish on top of the podium.

"I am a bit disappointed. I felt I could win gold. Right up to the last second, I felt I was being aggressive and could score. However, I think I lost today because of some negative play that resulted in a penalty point against me," she said after the final.

Dedicating the medal to the nation and her family, Yamini thanked them for their constant support.

"First and foremost, this medal is for my country and my family. They have always supported me," she said.

Looking ahead, the Indian judoka said her next target is the Asian Games, where she hopes to improve on her Commonwealth Games performance.

"I am heading to the Asian Games, and I want to try to win a medal there as well. I will give it my all to bring home the gold," she added.
