Tehran, Jul 26: An oil tanker exploded in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday after reportedly striking a naval mine, according to local media, in an incident that comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia.
Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that the vessel allegedly moved away from the navigation route designated by Iranian authorities and entered an area outside the approved maritime corridor despite earlier warnings.
Preliminary reports indicate that the tanker hit a naval mine after deviating from the prescribed shipping lane. No immediate information was available on casualties, the extent of the damage, or the vessel's ownership.
The Strait of Hormuz, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes, serving as a critical passage for global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the region following recent military confrontations involving the United States and Iran.
Earlier on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said recent discussions between Iran and Oman on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz had been constructive and had achieved positive progress.
According to Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), technical talks were held in Tehran on Friday and Saturday at the level of deputy foreign ministers. The discussions focused on developing practical mechanisms and shared principles to safeguard maritime traffic through the strategic waterway while respecting the sovereign rights of both coastal nations.
Baqaei confirmed that the Omani delegation concluded its visit on Saturday but said technical and political consultations between the two countries would continue.
He also stated that there has been no change in the operational status of commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz despite the prevailing regional tensions.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reiterated that the United States continues to enforce its naval blockade against Iran.
In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said that, as of July 25, US forces had redirected 12 commercial vessels attempting to breach the blockade, disabled two vessels that failed to comply with instructions, and boarded two others to verify compliance with the restrictions.
The latest tanker explosion adds to growing concerns over the security of one of the world's most strategically important shipping lanes, through which a substantial share of global energy supplies passes every day.
