Moodbidri, July 18: Tension prevailed at the private bus stand in Moodbidri on Saturday evening after a youth, allegedly in an inebriated condition, moved around openly carrying a machete and threatened people, creating fear among commuters, shopkeepers and others present in the area.
The youth has been identified as a resident of Perinje in Beltangady taluk.
According to reports, the youth entered the bus stand while allegedly under the influence of alcohol and went around carrying the machete openly.


He reportedly threatened people at the spot and later walked to a mobile phone shop located on the premises, where he allegedly threatened the youngsters present there as well as the shop owner, demanding that they hand over mobile phones.
After the incident, he reportedly came outside the shop and sat at the bus stand, keeping the machete behind his back, further causing panic among those present at the location.
On receiving information about the incident, a team from Moodbidri police station rushed to the bus stand and took the youth into custody.
Police said a case is being registered against him under the Arms Act and other applicable sections of law for allegedly threatening people while carrying the weapon. The accused will be arrested and produced before a magistrate, police added.
Further investigation into the incident is under way.
