Beltangady, Jul 17: A rare smooth-coated otter, locally known as Neeru Naayi (water dog), was spotted in the Phalguni river near Gardadi village in Beltangady taluk, drawing significant attention from the local residents.
The semi-aquatic mammal was seen swimming and moving swiftly along the banks of the river flowing through the Gardadi region. Curious locals gathered at the spot to witness the creature, which is not frequently sighted in the upper stretches of the river.

Environmental enthusiasts and wildlife experts have welcomed the sighting, noting that the presence of otters is a healthy indicator of a thriving aquatic ecosystem, clean water levels, and a good fish population in the Phalguni river. The smooth-coated otter is a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, and its occurrence highlights the ecological significance of the river stretch.
