Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing: Vishvanath, Ganga strike gold for India

Jakarta, Jul 16: Vishvanath Suresh and Ganga won gold medals as India wrapped up its campaign at the Asian U-19 and U-23 Boxing Championships with an impressive performance in the finals held in Jakarta on Thursday.

In the U-23 men's competition, reigning senior Asian champion Vishvanath Suresh clinched the 50kg title after edging Japan's Daichi Iwai 3-2 in a closely fought final.

Ganga also secured gold in the 55kg category, defeating Kazakhstan's Bexulatn Boranbek by an identical 3-2 verdict.

India narrowly missed a third gold in the U-23 men's finals, with Vanshaj settling for silver after going down 1-4 to Uzbekistan's Ilkhomjon Ergashev in the 65kg final.

In the U-19 men's finals, Indian boxers finished with two silver medals after spirited performances.

Aditya lost 0-5 to Uzbekistan's Elyor Rustamov in the 55kg final, while Shubham Rajput suffered a similar 0-5 defeat against Uzbekistan's Asadbek Sultanboev in the 90kg title clash.

The two gold medals by Vishvanath and Ganga capped a successful campaign for India at the continental championships.
