From TCS programmer to billionaire; the inspiring journey of Bharat Desai

Mumbai, Jul 15: The remarkable entrepreneurial journey of Bharat Desai serves as a classic blueprint of how a modest beginning, driven by vision and determination, can create a global technology enterprise. The former Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employee went on to co-found the IT consulting and outsourcing giant Syntel, transforming a minimal investment into a massive corporate empire.

Born in Kenya and raised in India, Desai completed his graduation in electrical engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. He later moved to the United States, where he earned an MBA in finance from the University of Michigan. In the late 1970s, he joined TCS as a software programmer, a role that gave him deep insights into the emerging global IT landscape.

Instead of continuing along a stable corporate career path, Desai chose to venture into entrepreneurship. In 1980, operating out of their apartment in Troy, Michigan, Desai and his wife, Neerja Sethi, founded Syntel. The couple bootstrapped the startup using just Rs 16,000 (around 2,000 US dollars at the time) pulled from their personal savings. Their primary objective was to offer technology consulting and outsourcing services during the absolute infancy of the global IT sector.

Under Desai’s leadership as chairman and Sethi's strategic operational guidance, Syntel grew exponentially over the next few decades. The firm carved a niche in digital transformation, cloud services, and automation, catering to numerous Fortune 500 clients globally. The enterprise grew from a modest first-year revenue of 30,000 US dollars to generating hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

A historic milestone for the company arrived in 2018 when French IT services major Atos acquired Syntel in a massive all-cash deal valued at 3.4 billion US dollars (equivalent to approximately Rs 32,000 crore today). The transaction remains one of the largest corporate exits by an Indian-origin tech entrepreneur.

Following the blockbuster acquisition, Desai’s personal net worth soared past Rs 15,000 crore, securing his position among the wealthiest Indian-origin technology entrepreneurs globally. His journey from a routine programming job to the billionaire club continues to inspire millions of aspiring tech professionals across the country.
