Melbourne, Jul 10: The Big Bash League (BBL) will make history by staging its first-ever overseas match when the Melbourne Renegades take on the Perth Scorchers at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12.

The landmark fixture was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during an event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday as part of the 'G'day Namaste' initiative aimed at strengthening India-Australia ties.

The match will be treated as a home fixture for the Renegades and is scheduled to begin at 2.40 pm local time in Chennai (8.10 pm AEDT). It will be played after the fourth day's play of the opening Test between Australia and New Zealand in Perth.

Cricket Australia said both teams would be provided adequate recovery time before returning to Australia for their subsequent BBL fixtures. The complete schedule for the 16th edition of the tournament is expected to be released next week.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as Chepauk, has a seating capacity of around 38,000, and Cricket Australia is optimistic of attracting a strong turnout despite the absence of an Indian team.

Cricket Australia's Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, said the BBL already enjoys considerable popularity among Indian cricket fans, particularly in Chennai.

He also acknowledged that weather could pose a challenge, with Chennai often experiencing heavy rain during the northeast monsoon in December. Cricket Australia is exploring possible adjustments to playing conditions, including extending the match cut-off time if rain interrupts play.

Dobson said several BBL franchises had expressed interest in hosting the overseas fixture, but the Renegades and Scorchers were selected after considering scheduling and logistical factors.

He also clarified that discussions surrounding possible private investment in BBL franchises had no bearing on the selection of the two teams.

Cricket Australia is currently treating the Chennai match as a one-off event but indicated that similar overseas fixtures could become a regular feature if the inaugural edition proves successful and receives the necessary approvals.

Meanwhile, WA Cricket Chief Executive John Stephenson described the match as a historic opportunity for the Perth Scorchers to expand their fan base in India's vast cricket market while retaining their full schedule of five home games in the upcoming BBL season.
