470 litres of adulterated branded milk seized in Mumbai; one arrested

Mumbai, Jul 10: Mumbai Police have arrested a man for allegedly adulterating branded milk with contaminated water and seized 470 litres of adulterated milk during a raid in Dahisar East, officials said.

The accused was apprehended on Thursday during an operation carried out by Unit 12 of the Crime Branch's Detection Unit at a premises in Dubey Chawl near Rajesh Compound.

According to police, the accused allegedly cut open sealed milk pouches of reputed brands, removed a portion of the milk, mixed it with contaminated water and resealed the packets before distributing them to consumers.

During the raid, officials, along with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officers, seized 470 litres of adulterated milk worth Rs 29,750, 327 empty branded milk pouches, equipment used for adulteration and resealing, and a mobile phone. The total value of the seized property was estimated at Rs 39,750.

Police said the adulterated milk was packed in pouches bearing the labels of Amul and Gokul. The entire stock of adulterated milk was destroyed at the spot.

A case has been registered at Dahisar Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related rules. Further investigation is underway.

In a similar crackdown last month, the FDA seized and destroyed adulterated milk, dairy products and sweets worth Rs 13.71 lakh during a three-day enforcement drive across Pune and Solapur districts under its 'Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra' campaign.

During the drive, officials suspended the licence of a milk processing unit in Shirur taluka after detecting suspected adulteration and destroyed 12,278 litres of milk.
