Mangaluru, Jul 10: Tilak Guru, owner of the Young Friends Urwa team and a widely respected figure in underarm cricket, has passed away, leaving the sporting fraternity bereaved. He was regarded as an ambassador of underarm cricket and played a pivotal role in taking the game to a wider audience across the world.

Guru served continuously as the supervisor and patron of cricket tournaments held at the Urwa grounds and also led his own team as its captain. He is credited with introducing the concept of live telecasts for underarm cricket, a move that significantly enhanced the sport’s popularity.

He also spearheaded the initiative to provide remuneration to underarm cricket players on a daily allowance basis. Beyond cricket, Guru earned acclaim as a coordinator and organiser of numerous cultural programmes.

His passing marks the end of an illustrious chapter in the history of underarm cricket, and heartfelt tributes have poured in from friends, players and well-wishers.
