Udupi, Jul 9: The Freedom Run Marathon Committee, Manipal, officially launched the fifth edition of Freedom Run 2026 under the theme ‘Go Green – For a Greener Tomorrow’ at the Canara Bank Circle Office Conference Hall in Manipal on July 9.

Organised annually with a social message, this year's marathon focuses on environmental conservation and sustainability. The event is powered by Canara Bank, Manipal and will be held on August 9, ahead of Independence Day.

Freedom Run has, over the years, championed different social causes. The inaugural edition created awareness against plastic use, the second focused on combating drug abuse, the third promoted women empowerment, while the fourth edition carried the theme ‘Stride with Pride for Our Armed Forces.’ This year's edition aims to inspire participants to adopt greener lifestyles and contribute towards environmental protection.

The fifth edition of Freedom Run Manipal was officially launched with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by the unveiling of the event logo, marathon jersey and the launch of official website by the dignitaries.

Dr Roshan Shetty, assistant director of the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Udupi, lauded the organisers for successfully conducting the event over the past five years. He said that organising a marathon of such magnitude requires tremendous planning and teamwork. Since many people remain occupied on Independence Day, the organisers have scheduled this year's event on August 9.

He also noted that athletes from Udupi district have been winning prizes in marathons held across the country and said such events provide an excellent platform to encourage local runners. He expressed hope that many more marathons would be organized in the district.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Balakrishna S Maddodi, assistant professor at MIT, Manipal, said the vision of the fifth edition extends beyond a marathon and seeks to create a nationwide green movement. He proposed initiatives such as encouraging every citizen to take a green pledge, nurturing at least one tree, using QR codes to digitally monitor tree growth, involving youth organisations and NGOs in plantation drives, and conducting workshops, eco-talks, quizzes, street plays and awareness campaigns on environmental conservation. He expressed confidence that the initiative would create a lasting impact.

H K Gangadar, circle head, Canara Bank, Manipal, praised the young organizing team led by Sachin Shetty, Suraj Uppoor and Durgaprasad for transforming a small initiative into one of the region's major fitness events. “Freedom Run began as a small initiative under the leadership of our young team, and it has grown tremendously over the years. With over 7,000 participants in the previous edition, we are confident this year's event will set a new benchmark in registrations. The marathon is not just about running; it is a celebration of fitness, family participation and community spirit. True to its name, Freedom Run also reflects the spirit of patriotism. This year's 'Go Green' theme aims to spread awareness about sustainable living and the responsible use of natural resources. I am confident that this event will continue to grow and one day celebrates its 50th edition,” he said.

Sachin Shetty, senior manager, Canara Bank Circle Office, briefed the gathering about the objectives and arrangements for the fifth edition of Freedom Run. Major Radhakrishnan compered the programme.

The event was led by senior manager Canara Bank Circle Office Sachin Shetty, senior manager Suraj Uppoor, manager Canara Bank Circle Office Manipal Durgaprasad along with others.

Among those present were Purushottam Shetty, managing director of Ujwal Developers, senior officers and staff of Canara Bank, students and invited guests.

The Freedom Run 2026 will feature 21K, 10K, 5K, 3K and Fun Run categories. Every finisher will receive a commemorative medal, premium T-shirt and goodie bag. The event carries a total cash prize pool of Rs 5 lac for top performers.
