Sullia Jul 7: Padma Shri awardee and senior bridge expert Dr Girish Bharadwaj, popularly known as the 'Bridge Man of India' for constructing more than 150 suspension bridges and renowned across the country as the 'Commander of Suspension Bridges', passed away due to illness at KVG Hospital in Sullia on Tuesday morning. He was 76.

Dr Bharadwaj had recently returned after visiting temples in Uttara Kannada district. Over the past few days, he had developed heart-related health complications and was admitted to KVG Hospital in Sullia for treatment. However, he succumbed despite medical efforts.

Dr Bharadwaj earned national and international recognition for constructing low-cost, eco-friendly suspension bridges. Through the construction of hundreds of bridges connecting remote rural areas, he left an indelible mark on the lives of countless people by improving connectivity for rural communities.

In recognition of his immense social service and invaluable contribution to the field of engineering, the government of India honoured him with the prestigious Padma Shri award.
