Gender Sensitization Cell & Eco-Club marks Yoga Day & Van Mahotsav at Sub-Jail Mangalore

Mangaluru, Jul 6: The Gender Sensitization Cell, Yenepoya Pharmacy College & Research Centre, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) Mangaluru, commemorated the International Day of Yoga by organizing a week of yoga sessions for inmates of District Sub-jail, Kodialbail, Mangaluru, and the Eco club to mark Van Mahotsav on July 5, 2026. All guests and inmates were planted saplings towards the end of the event.

Not every prisoner is a criminal by nature and prisons naturally provides the necessary things such as food, shelter and security, but developing a positive mindset requires active participation in rehabilitative programs like yoga, creative arts, sports etc which are crucial for building resilience, said chief guest of the event Mrs. Sumana Sharan, Advocate & Juvenile justice board member Mangalore, who inaugurated the programme and thanked the Jail superintendent for permitting the Yenepoya organization to conduct the event.

Yoga helps rehabilitate inmates by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression while improving impulse control and emotional stability. These practices foster a calmer and more peaceful environment. It helps reduce violent behaviour and supports mental, physical, and emotional healing during incarceration, said the guest of honour, Sharanabasappa, superintendent of the sub jail in Mangaluru, in his inauguration talk.

The presiding officer, Dr Mohammed Gulzar Ahmed, principal and dean of Yenepoya Pharmacy College, highlighted how the Gender Sensitization Cell and other committees and clubs of the pharmacy college work to translate broad social work values such as equity, dignity, and human rights into structured, actionable community initiatives and campus support systems. He congratulated all members of the organizing committee for the successful organization of the event, the participants for their active participation, and requested the Jail superintendent to continue organizing such events for the various benefits of inmates.

Organizing chairperson Dr Prajitha Biju welcomed the gathering and the organizing secretary, Fathima, delivered the vote of thanks. The committee members, Mubeena, Krishna Priya, and Suraksha, also attended the program.
