Udupi, Jun 8: Udupi, a prominent religious and tourist destination in Karnataka, welcomes thousands of devotees and visitors every day. Tourists arriving to visit Sri Krishna Mutt, Kollur Mookambika Temple, Karkala, Malpe Beach, and other attractions often use the Udupi Service Bus Stand as a key transit point. However, the poor condition of the bus shelter at the bus stand has become a matter of concern for passengers and visitors alike.
With the arrival of the southwest monsoon, the situation has worsened considerably. The roof of the bus shelter at the bay designated for Mangaluru-bound express buses has developed several leaks, forcing passengers to sit and wait with umbrellas open to avoid getting drenched.

Passengers allege that the bus shelter, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), has suffered from neglect for a long time. Apart from the leaking roof, commuters have also raised concerns about inadequate lighting and uneven flooring at the bus stand.
Expressing frustration over the lack of maintenance, a bus agent said, “The roof at the bus stand is leaking, but the municipality is not taking any action. Passengers are forced to hold umbrellas while waiting for buses. There is also no proper lighting, and the floor is uneven. Tourists who visit Udupi are left with a poor impression of the city.”
Another bus agent said that passengers frequently get wet while waiting for buses because of the leaking roof. “Municipal authorities have completely ignored this bus stop despite repeated complaints,” he alleged.
A passenger also voiced disappointment over the condition of the facility. “Even while standing inside the bus shelter, we are forced to use umbrellas. Authorities collect taxes and promise development, but basic facilities are lacking. The monsoon has already begun, and immediate action is required,” the passenger said.
The Udupi City Municipal Council authorities have been urged to undertake urgent repairs to the damaged roof and improve other basic amenities at the bus stand before the monsoon intensifies further. Residents stressed that maintaining a clean and well-equipped bus stand is essential not only for the convenience of local residents but also for preserving Udupi’s image as a major pilgrimage and tourist destination.
