Puttur, Jun 8: Lacs of fish were found dead in the Nethravati river after the gates of the dam constructed at Biliyooru were opened on Saturday, causing the backwaters to recede rapidly and the river to return to its natural flow.
With the onset of the southwest monsoon in Dakshina Kannada district, authorities opened the dam gates, resulting in a sharp drop in water levels. The river, which had resembled a reservoir for nearly six months due to the accumulated backwaters, was left significantly depleted.

As the water receded, large numbers of fish trapped in the stagnant stretches of the river died. Dead fish were reportedly seen at several locations from the Biliyooru dam up to Bedrodi in Bajathuru village, covering a stretch of nearly five kilometres.
Meanwhile, at the Sahasralingeshwara Temple, temple staff removed bones and silver offerings that had accumulated on the river steps. These items had been immersed in the river by devotees performing last rites while the backwaters remained filled.
In another significant development, the Udbhava Linga, which had been exposed for public viewing after sand removal in November last year, has reappeared fully after remaining submerged under backwaters for nearly six months. Despite prolonged submergence, the linga was found free of sand deposits and is now visible in its entirety.
Following its reappearance, devotees gathered at the site and offered prayers.
