Udupi, June 2: In a remarkable medical feat, a team of specialist doctors at the Government Mother and Child Hospital in Udupi successfully removed an enormous 8-kilogram uterine fibroid from a 44-year-old woman, bringing relief to a patient who had endured persistent abdominal pain for nearly a year.
The complex surgery was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by gynaecologists Dr Shashank Kini, Dr Jasmine, Dr Kavitha and Dr Amruthansh, with the support of anaesthesiologists Dr Suryanarayana and Dr Rajgopal Bhandary.
Nursing officer Rakshitha and Operation Theatre assistant Sangeetha were also part of the team involved in the successful procedure. Hospital authorities said the patient is recovering well and continues to receive post-operative care.

According to doctors, the woman had been experiencing abdominal pain for the past year and had sought treatment from a private healthcare provider. However, as her condition failed to improve, she later approached the Government Mother and Child Hospital for specialised evaluation.
During clinical examination, doctors found that her abdomen had expanded to a size comparable to that of a pregnant woman and appeared to contain a large fluid-filled mass. Concerned by the unusual swelling, specialists ordered an ultrasound scan followed by a CT scan, which revealed the presence of a giant fibroid growth in the uterus.
Given the size and complexity of the tumour, the medical team decided that surgery was the only viable treatment option. The case was subsequently discussed with District Surgeon Dr H Ashok of the District Hospital and Mother and Child Hospital. Following detailed consultations and planning, the patient underwent surgery on May 25.
Doctors successfully removed the unusually large uterine fibroid during the operation, marking a significant achievement for the government-run healthcare institution and highlighting the advanced surgical expertise available within the public health system.
District Surgeon Dr Ashok congratulated the entire team of specialists and hospital staff for their professionalism and commitment in carrying out the challenging procedure successfully.
Expressing gratitude to the doctors who treated her, the patient said: “I thank all the doctors and the district surgeon. The medical team treated us without any difficulty and took great care of us. I hope that even more treatment facilities become available at this hospital for poor patients like us.”
