Vasco woman killed in Thar accident; drunk-driving suspected in Calangute café crash

Panaji, Jun 1: A woman from Baina died after being hit by a Mahindra Thar in Vasco, while a separate incident in North Goa saw a car crash into a café in Calangute, causing damage to property, police said.

According to police, Genadevi Jaiswar, a resident of Sasmollem, Baina, sustained severe injuries after being struck by a Mahindra Thar at Alto Mangoor in Vasco. She suffered serious head injuries and was rushed for treatment.

Despite medical efforts, Jaiswar succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim.

Police have registered a case against the driver, identified as Abhijit Rane of Orolim, for allegedly driving in a rash and negligent manner resulting in the fatal accident. Further investigation is in progress.

In another incident, a car crashed into Café El Mar at Tito’s Lane in Calangute, damaging the café’s glass entrance and a statue of a deity kept on the premises.

Sources said the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the vehicle lost control and rammed into the establishment. CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing the moment of impact.

No injuries were reported in the Calangute incident, though the café sustained property damage. Calangute police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether alcohol consumption was involved.
