Mangaluru/Udupi, June 1: The academic year 2026-27 commenced on a cheerful and vibrant note across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Monday, with students returning to schools after the summer vacation.
The government schools in Gandhi Nagar and Mannagudde of Mangaluru wore a festive look with students enthusiastically entering the campuses. At Volakadu Government School in Udupi, children arrived with excitement and enthusiasm, marking the beginning of a new academic journey. The school campus came alive with joyful scenes as students reunited with their classmates and teachers after the holidays.

The reopening celebrations began with a special morning assembly, followed by a warm welcome extended by the teaching staff, who greeted the students with flowers. Teachers guided students to their classrooms and ensured a smooth start to the new academic year.
Parents, especially those accompanying children joining school for the first time, were seen actively participating in the reopening activities. The school administration expressed confidence that the new academic year would offer enhanced learning opportunities and contribute to the overall development of the students.
Government schools across both districts have successfully reopened. As part of the first-day programmes, uniforms and textbooks were distributed to students, and sweets were arranged to mark the occasion. Several schools also organised special receptions for new entrants.
With the commencement of academic activities, schools will give priority to bridge classes aimed at reducing learning gaps between the previous year's syllabus and the new curriculum. Teachers have made the necessary preparations to assess students' learning levels and provide appropriate academic support.
The midday meal scheme also resumed from June 1, with schools completing all necessary arrangements to provide nutritious meals to the students.
