Panaji, May 27: Goa’s municipal solid waste management system is facing increasing pressure, with the quantity of untreated garbage rising nearly five-fold over the last four years even as the State’s waste processing efficiency has declined significantly.
According to official data on municipal solid waste generation and processing, Goa is currently leaving more than 25 tonnes of waste untreated every day, compared to just around 5 tonnes per day (TPD) in 2021.

In 2021, Goa generated its highest waste load of nearly 250 TPD, but managed to process almost 98 per cent of the total waste generated, leaving only a minimal quantity untreated.
However, despite generating comparatively lower waste volumes in recent years, the State has struggled to maintain the same level of processing efficiency.
In 2025, Goa is generating around 193 TPD of waste daily, but only 87 per cent of it is being processed, resulting in nearly 25 TPD remaining untreated every day.
The figures highlight a widening gap between waste generation and treatment capacity, raising concerns over the State’s preparedness to handle growing urbanisation and tourism-related waste.
Waste generation had dropped sharply to 128 TPD in 2022, during which around 88 per cent of the waste was processed. However, garbage generation increased again to 181 TPD in 2023 and further to 193 TPD in 2024, with similar levels continuing in 2025.
Despite the rising waste load over the last three years, processing efficiency has remained stagnant at 87 per cent since 2023.
Currently, Goa has two operational integrated municipal solid waste treatment facilities. North Goa is served by the 250 TPD Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility at Saligao, while South Goa is catered to by the 100 TPD Manohar Parrikar Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility at Cacora, both managed by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC).
To address the growing waste burden, the GWMC is setting up a new 250 TPD Integrated Common Municipal Waste Management Facility at the Verna Industrial Estate to strengthen waste treatment capacity in South Goa.
In addition, another waste management facility with a proposed capacity of 100 TPD has been planned at Bainguinim in Tiswadi to cater to Goa’s central region.
