Panaji, May 22: Rohan Khaunte has said it is “high time” that Goa’s hospitality sector is granted formal industry status, stressing that tourism-related issues in the state require coordinated action across multiple government departments.
The minister said problems such as touts, stray dogs on beaches and potholes on roads directly impact tourism and cannot be viewed solely as the responsibility of the tourism department.
“When tourists see touts, stray dogs or potholes, it becomes a tourism issue. Responsibility must be shared across departments,” Khaunte said.

His remarks came after the Ladakh Administration granted formal industry status to registered hotels and guest houses in the Union Territory with effect from June 1.
Khaunte said the tourism department was continuously working to ensure that every aspect connected to tourism is properly managed and added that both tourists and stakeholders must act responsibly.
The minister also said that requirements for implementing a single-window clearance system for water sports activities should be completed before the next tourist season.
He further stated that the Director of Tourism had been instructed to hold joint meetings with forest department officials to ensure smooth management of monsoon tourism activities, especially adventure tourism and hinterland tourism initiatives.
Expressing concern over unregistered tour operators organising events in hinterland areas without accountability or environmental responsibility, Khaunte said Goa was focusing on promoting regenerative tourism.
He added that individuals such as Parag Rangnekar were working towards promoting Goa responsibly and sustainably.
According to the minister, the tourism director and secretary have also been directed to establish a registration process for agencies conducting hinterland nature tours. The department has been asked to prepare a document outlining rules, regulations and responsibilities to facilitate speedy implementation.
