Margao, May 21: A sand bar formation at Colva beach has led to flooding around the remaining operational beach shacks, causing inconvenience to shack owners, local residents and tourists.
The situation developed after rising seawater swept across portions of the beach, submerging shacks and inundating the stretch leading up to the beach entrance.

Unlike previous instances when the seawater naturally receded, the water has remained trapped due to the formation of a sand bar between the shoreline and the sea.
Large pools of stagnant seawater now surround several beach shacks, leaving beach beds, furniture and other equipment partially submerged. Shack operators said the flooding has severely affected business activities and made access difficult for visitors.
A local shack operator urged authorities to intervene immediately and facilitate drainage of the stagnant water back into the sea.
“The water needs to flow back into the sea. We are ready to create a passage for it, but earlier complaints were filed whenever such attempts were made,” a local resident associated with the shack business said.
The shack operators have appealed to the Water Resources Department and local authorities to provide urgent relief and prevent further damage.
Meanwhile, tourists visiting Colva beach were seen wading through knee-deep stagnant water while carrying their footwear and belongings by hand to reach the shoreline.
