Panaji, May 5: The Portuguese Language Centre of Camões in Goa, in collaboration with the Consulate-General of Portugal in Goa and the University of Goa, will celebrate World Portuguese Language Day on May 5 with a special reading session titled “Your Simple Gaze Shelters My Soul.”

The event, held in the year marking the 30th anniversary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), aims to highlight the global and diverse nature of the Portuguese language, which is spoken by nearly 300 million people worldwide.

The reading session will bring together students and teachers of Portuguese from Goa, along with participants from partner institutions across India. The programme will place particular emphasis on African and Indian literary works written in Portuguese, reflecting the language’s rich cultural spread.

The celebrations will conclude with a dramatised reading of an adaptation of “Auto de El-Rei Seleuco” by Luís de Camões. The performance will be staged by University of Goa students and will be accompanied by Bharatanatyam dance, blending classical Indian art with Portuguese literary heritage.

With a presence spanning over five centuries in India, especially in Goa, the Portuguese language continues to serve as a vital link for cultural exchange, academic collaboration, and international dialogue.
