US weighs troop reduction in Europe amid diplomatic tensions

Daijiworld Media Network - Washington

Washington, May 2: The Pentagon is considering withdrawing around 5,000 American troops from Germany, according to a senior defence official.

The development comes against the backdrop of strained remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose recent comments on US military actions involving Iran were described by the official as “inappropriate and unhelpful.”

Earlier in the week, Merz had criticized the United States for what he called a “planless” approach to its military engagement with Iran, adding that Washington appeared to be “losing face” in the situation.

Responding sharply, US President Donald Trump dismissed Merz’s remarks, stating that the German leader lacked understanding of the issue and was indifferent to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Taking to X, Trump indicated that a decision on reducing US troop presence in Germany could be made soon.

He also suggested that American military deployments in other European countries, including Spain and Italy, might be scaled back, criticizing these allies for what he described as insufficient support in the ongoing tensions involving Iran.

Meanwhile, Johann Wadephul stated that Germany is prepared to handle a potential reduction in US forces stationed in the country, signaling readiness for a shift in military arrangements.
