Byndoor, Apr 27: Police have arrested an interstate burglar in connection with a gold theft reported at a house in Padavari village of Byndoor.
The theft had taken place at the residence of Gurukiran Patwal in Padavari village. Taking advantage of the house being vacant during daytime, the accused allegedly broke open the door, entered the house, and stole gold ornaments kept in a cupboard.
The arrested accused has been identified as Umesh Balegar Mallaru. During interrogation, he revealed that the stolen gold ornaments had been melted into gold bars and hidden for sale in Madurai. Based on the information, police went to Madurai and seized a total of 22 grams of gold bars worth approximately Rs 2.81 lac.

Police said Umesh Balegar is an accused in several interstate theft cases. A total of 36 cases have been registered against him in police stations across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. He has been convicted in eight cases.
Another 23 cases are still pending investigation in police station limits of Belthangady, Bantwal, Moodbidri, Subrahmanya, Puttur, Koppa, Thirthahalli, Sirsi, Basavanahalli in Chikkamagaluru, Hiriyur in Chitradurga, Sringeri, Kumta, Malpe, Kapu, and in parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of H D Kulkarni, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kundapur subdivision, and under the leadership of Shivakumar B, CPI, Byndoor.
The team included PSI Sunil Kumar B Y and Naveen Borakar of Byndoor police station; PSI Bhima Shankar and Vinay Korlahalli of Kollur police station; ASI Seetharam and staff members Chidananda, Malappa Desai, and Thimmanna Nayak of Byndoor police station; staff members Nagendra and Rama Poojari of Kollur police station; Krishna and Sandeep Kurani of Gangolli police station; and L Mohan Kumari, Police Inspector of the fingerprint division of the district police office, along with staff. Dinesh of the district police office also took part in the operation.
