Ahilyanagar (Maharashtra), Apr 26: Veteran social activist Anna Hazare has urged the government to introduce strict legislation to prevent elected representatives from switching political parties after winning elections. He also called on voters to make informed and thoughtful choices when casting their ballots.

His remarks follow a major political shake-up involving seven members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Rajya Sabha who recently defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including former Deputy Leader Raghav Chadha.

In an interaction with reporters, Hazare pointed out that the Constitution does not explicitly refer to political parties or factions, but instead emphasizes the welfare of society and the nation. He expressed concern that divisions created by party politics are contributing to increasing conflicts within society.

Hazare criticized party-switching leaders, attributing their actions to personal gain. According to him, many politicians change affiliations based on self-interest, aligning themselves wherever they see greater benefits.

He stressed the need for a firm legal framework to curb such practices, stating that a strong anti-defection law would prevent elected representatives from abandoning the parties under which they were chosen by the public. He argued that such legislation would help maintain accountability and reduce political instability.

Hazare also encouraged citizens to reflect on recent political defections and urged them to exercise caution while voting. He emphasized that voters hold the ultimate power in a democracy and must carefully evaluate candidates to ensure responsible leadership.

Additionally, he criticized a section of politicians for prioritizing wealth and power over public service. He described a recurring cycle where power leads to money, and money in turn fuels the pursuit of power, calling it a key factor behind unethical political behavior.
