Mangaluru, Apr 22: The FTSC-1 Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced five individuals to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a total fine of Rs 1.34 lac for assaulting a man following a dispute over giving side while driving.

The convicted individuals are Dinesh Shetty (27) from Kavalapadooru, Bantwal; Dhanraj Poojary alias Valachil Dhanu (22) from Arkula; Naveen (21) from Edapadavu; Prajwal Poojary (20) from Car Street; and Vasant Bala (53) from Tadambail.

Background of the case

According to the prosecution, the incident was triggered by a confrontation that took place two days prior to the assault. A heated argument had broken out between Dinesh, Vasant, and the victim, Kishan Rao, over giving side to a car. Seeking revenge, Vasant Bala allegedly conspired with the other four accused to attack Rao.

On October 22, the accused, armed with lethal weapons, waited for the victim at Vinayaka Mosaic Road in Kulai Hosabettu village. As Kishan Rao was travelling on his scooter, Dinesh Shetty deliberately intercepted and rammed into him with a car provided by Vasant Bala. The group then assaulted Rao and issued death threats.

Court verdict

A case was registered at the Surathkal police station following the incident. Judge Mohan J S of the FTSC-1 Additional District and Sessions Court, who presided over the trial, found the accused guilty and delivered the sentence.

Government prosecutors Harishchandra Udyavar and K Badrinath Nayari represented the case.
