Goa, Apr 20: Former chief minister Churchill Alemao has appealed for an end to the recurring debate over language in Goa, urging citizens to embrace unity and mutual respect between Konkani and Marathi speakers.

Addressing the issue, Alemao emphasised the cultural significance of both languages in the state’s identity. He said, “Marathi is like our aunt, while Konkani is our mother,” highlighting the emotional and historical connection Goans share with both languages.

He noted that people across religious communities in Goa had collectively worked to secure official status for Konkani language, while also ensuring due recognition for Marathi language.

Alemao stressed that the issue should no longer be politicised or repeatedly debated, calling instead for social harmony and forward movement. He urged citizens to respect Goa’s linguistic diversity and maintain peace between communities, reinforcing the idea that both languages have a rightful and respected place in the state’s cultural fabric.
