Kashmir on high alert ahead of Pahalgam attack anniversary

Srinagar, Apr 19: Security has been significantly intensified across the Kashmir Valley ahead of the anniversary of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, with special focus on tourist destinations.

The attack, carried out on April 22 last year at the scenic Baisaran meadow, left 26 people dead, including 25 tourists and a local pony operator. The assault was attributed to Pakistan-backed militants linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

According to intelligence inputs, all security agencies have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance in the days leading up to the anniversary. Senior officers, including V.K. Birdi, have reviewed preparedness measures during high-level meetings held in Srinagar.

The aftermath of the attack had triggered a sharp escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorising decisive action by the armed forces. This led to targeted operations such as Operation Sindoor, during which terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was struck.

In response, cross-border hostilities intensified, with areas like Poonch witnessing civilian casualties. India later retaliated by targeting multiple defence installations across the border.

The attack had severely impacted Kashmir’s tourism sector, prompting authorities to temporarily shut down dozens of tourist spots. However, sustained efforts by the administration, including initiatives led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, helped restore confidence among visitors.

To enhance safety, new measures have been implemented in Pahalgam, including mandatory police verification of service providers and a QR code-based identification system. Tourists can now scan these codes to verify details of guides, pony operators, and vendors, ensuring greater transparency and security.

With tourism gradually rebounding and visitor numbers rising again, authorities remain focused on preventing any repeat of past incidents. Officials say the heightened security and community cooperation reflect a collective resolve to safeguard peace and ensure the safety of all visitors to the region.
