Agarkar set for extension as chief selector; Suryakumar’s form under scanner ahead of key tour

New Delhi, Apr 19: BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar is likely to receive a one-year contract extension beyond June 2026, with the board keen to retain continuity ahead of major upcoming tournaments, according to reports.

Agarkar, whose current tenure ends in June, is expected to continue till June 2027. During his stint, India enjoyed significant success, winning three ICC titles — the T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025, and T20 World Cup 2026 — while also finishing runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home.

Sources indicated that the board was impressed with the smooth transition within the team and the bold decisions taken under his leadership. With the next ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027, the BCCI is said to favour stability in the selection panel.

Meanwhile, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav finds himself under scrutiny despite leading the team to a successful T20 World Cup title defence. Concerns over his inconsistent batting form have raised questions about his long-term role, particularly with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup in Australia on the horizon.

India’s upcoming tour of England and Ireland in June-July is expected to be crucial for Suryakumar, where his batting performance will be closely watched alongside his leadership.

While head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly backs him as the first-choice captain and is himself in line for an extended tenure, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is likely to take a performance-based approach moving forward.

Suryakumar endured a difficult 2025 season, struggling with form and failing to register a half-century, with his strike rate dipping below 120. Though he showed signs of recovery in 2026 with four fifties at an improved strike rate, his performances against stronger teams in the T20 World Cup remained underwhelming.

With emerging talent and a strong batting line-up at India’s disposal, consistency will be key for Suryakumar if he hopes to secure his place in the team for future global events.
