Tight security for Shirgao festival: 1,000 police personnel to be deployed at Lairai Devi Jatra

Panaji, Apr 19: In view of safety concerns following last year’s stampede, nearly 1,000 police personnel will be deployed for security during the annual Shree Lairai Devi Festival commencing on Monday at Shirgao village in North Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said.

The festival, which attracts thousands of devotees, had witnessed a tragic stampede last year that claimed six lives, prompting authorities to step up security and crowd management measures.

Chairing a review meeting with senior officials from the district administration, police department, health services, fire services, and temple committee, the Chief Minister assessed the preparedness for the event.

Sawant said the festival area has been divided into six zones to ensure effective monitoring and law and order. Each zone will be supervised by an officer of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) rank.

He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to create disturbances, indulge in mischief, or engage in fights during the event, stating that such individuals would be immediately removed from the venue.

The Chief Minister also appealed to devotees to cooperate with authorities to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the festival.

Officials have been instructed to remain on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents, with comprehensive arrangements put in place for crowd control, emergency response, and overall safety.
