Mangaluru, Apr 18: A representation has been submitted urging the Karnataka government to reconsider its decision to award only grades—rather than marks—for third language and NSQF subjects in the SSLC examination.

State president of Sarva College Vidyarthi Shakti (R), Rachan Salian, submitted a memorandum to MLC Manjunath Bhandary highlighting concerns over the recent evaluation changes.

According to the representation, the total marks for the SSLC examination have been reduced from 625 to 525. Under the revised system, third language subjects, including Hindi, will be reflected as grades instead of marks on the marks card. This has created confusion among students who have been studying Hindi and similar subjects, raising concerns about their academic future.

The memorandum also pointed out that many students had appeared for the examination with expectations of securing high marks. The shift to a grading system for certain subjects may lead to disappointment among such students. Parents, too, are reportedly anxious about how the changes could impact their children’s prospects.

Additionally, high school Hindi teachers have expressed apprehension over the decision, fearing it may affect the importance of the subject and their professional stability. The representation urged the government to reconsider the move and to award marks instead of grades for third language subjects, including Hindi, while consolidating SSLC results.

Responding to the appeal, MLC Manjunath Bhandary assured that he would bring the matter to the attention of the education minister and the state government for further consideration.
