Mangaluru, Apr 18: The NSS Unit of Nitte Institute of Allied Health Sciences (NIAHS), in collaboration with the State NSS Cell, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of Karnataka, and the Regional Directorate of NSS, Government of India, Bengaluru, successfully organized a 5K & 10K NSS marathon on April 18 at Deralakatte.
The event witnessed an overwhelming response, with participation from over 150 institutions across India and nearly 1700 participants, including students, NSS volunteers, and faculty members. The marathon stood as a vibrant celebration of fitness, unity, and the spirit of national service.









The programme began in the early morning hours near the K S Hegde Auditorium. Prof (Dr) Jayaprakash Shetty, dean, NIAHS, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of youth engagement, community participation, and healthy living.
The event was ceremonially flagged off by Vishal Hegde, chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University), along with Prof (Dr) B Dinesha, director, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences & Research, Bengaluru, amidst great enthusiasm from the participants.
The gathering was then addressed by eminent dignitaries. Prof (Dr) M Shantharam Shetty, pro-chancellor, Nitte University, motivated the participants by emphasizing discipline, perseverance, and the importance of such initiatives in shaping responsible citizens. Girdhar Upadhyay, regional director, NSS, Government of India, also addressed the gathering and appreciated the large-scale participation and the efforts of the organizers in bringing together institutions from across the country. Dr Prathap Lingaiah, state NSS officer, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of Karnataka, was also present as a guest on the occasion.
The marathon featured 5K and 10K race categories, conducted efficiently with well coordinated arrangements ensuring participant safety and smooth execution.
The event proceedings were compered by Dr Varsha Shetty and Varsha Shetty. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shashi Kumar Shetty, NSS coordinator, Nitte (Deemed to be University).
The event was organized by Anshya Shankar Rai and Dr Varsha Shetty, NSS programme officers of NIAHS, who were present on the occasion.
A total of 32 winners across four categories were recognized and awarded by the dignitaries. The winners were applauded for their outstanding performance, while all participants were encouraged to continue promoting fitness and social responsibility.
The event concluded on a successful note, showcasing the organizational excellence of NIAHS and NSS, and reinforcing their commitment towards youth empowerment, health awareness, and national integration.
