Mumbai, Apr 17: Apoorva Lakhia’s military drama Maatrubhumi, starring Salman Khan, has been delayed indefinitely despite completing its shoot in September last year, with the film now undergoing significant changes before release.

Originally titled Battle of Galwan, the film is based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh, in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives. The project reportedly portrays Salman Khan as Bikkumalla Santosh Babu of the 16 Bihar Regiment.

A teaser released in December last year drew attention for its depiction of the military conflict and reportedly sparked criticism from China’s Global Times, which called it a distorted representation of facts. Following this, the makers changed the title to Maatrubhumi: May War Rest In Peace.

Sources said the team has now undertaken a strategic shift, toning down direct references to China to avoid further controversy. The film, which initially aimed for an April release, has now been pushed indefinitely after reshoots and patchwork work in Mumbai.

Industry sources added that the passing of actor Prashant Tamang, who played a key antagonist, has also impacted portions of the film, requiring adjustments to certain sequences shot earlier in Ladakh.

With the delay, the makers are now reportedly eyeing a potential Independence Day weekend release, although no official announcement has been made as another major film is already slated for that period.

Given the sensitive geopolitical subject, the film is also expected to undergo multiple layers of scrutiny, including approvals from defence authorities before moving to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Despite the delays, the production house is said to be committed to a theatrical release rather than opting for an OTT platform.
