Arsenal make history with back-to-back Champions League semi-final qualification

London, Apr 16: Arsenal have reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in consecutive seasons for the first time in their history after holding Sporting CP to a disciplined result in a tense knockout clash.

The outcome was enough for Arsenal to progress to the last four of the UEFA Champions League, where they will now face Atlético Madrid.

Mikel Arteta’s side also remain the only unbeaten team in this season’s competition, registering 10 wins and 2 draws from 12 matches.

The Premier League side controlled large portions of the first half and nearly broke through around the half-hour mark. A precise pass from Eberechi Eze released Martin Zubimendi into the box, but despite the build-up, Sporting’s defence—led by Gonçalo Inácio—managed to block the danger after Viktor Gyökeres lurked for a finishing touch.

Despite Arsenal’s dominance, Sporting created the clearest first-half chance. Geny Catamo struck the base of the post after connecting with a cross from Maximiliano Araújo during a swift counterattack just before the interval.

After the restart, Sporting again threatened when Araújo cut inside and fired wide, while Arsenal responded through sustained pressure. Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke both came close to breaking the deadlock.

Late drama followed at both ends. Substitute Leandro Trossard saw his header from a corner by fellow substitute Max Dowman rebound off the post in the 84th minute, while João Simões missed a late opportunity for the visitors in stoppage time.

After the match, Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta praised his squad’s resilience, highlighting the collective effort behind a historic achievement for the club.

“It’s a moment of gratitude for the players,” Arteta said. “What they’ve achieved has never been done in the history of our club.”
